Who is weight loss surgeon Dr Candice Silverman?
Specialised training and accreditation
Dr Silverman always knew she wanted to be a surgeon. She studied medicine at The University of New South Wales in Sydney and thrived on teamwork and the competitive spirit. To help with finances and follow her love for the ocean, she joined the Royal Australian Navy as a 4th-year medical student.
After her internship and resident medical officer years at North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Dr Silverman spent three exciting years in uniform with the Royal Australian Navy. She served as a Ship’s Medical Officer, travelling the world on warships and participating in operations, diplomatic missions, and border protection activities.
In 2009, Dr Silverman completed additional post-fellowship training in upper Gastro-Intestinal surgery, focusing on minimally invasive techniques and high-volume bariatric surgery at John Flynn Private Hospital.
Experience and surgical expertise
Dr Silverman has been a consultant surgeon since 2010. She specialises in bariatric surgery, hernia repairs, and general surgery, performing these surgeries at John Flynn Private Hospital. Additionally, she performs hernia repairs and general surgery at The Tweed Valley Hospital.
Dr Silverman is the leading female surgeon in Australia for robotic bariatric surgery.

Dr Silverman’s passion for advancing surgical techniques took her to the USA, where she trained in the latest robotic procedures. She even wrote a chapter on robotic bariatric surgery for a well-known textbook.
Commitment to patient care
Dr Silverman’s approach to patient care is all about you. She works closely with a team of psychologists, dietitians and general practitioners to make sure you get complete care. Dr Silverman is also dedicated to research and contributes to Monash University’s Bariatric Surgery Registry.
In 2023, she completed Harvard’s course “The Surgical Leadership Program” with distinction for her capstone project on Soft Tissue Surgical Robotic Programmes. Dr Silverman also trains Fellows (younger surgeons) in both traditional laparoscopic procedures and for weight loss and robotic surgery.
Beyond medicine…
Outside of her professional life, Dr Silverman has a variety of interests, especially anything to do with the ocean. She stays active with the Royal Australian Navy and loves surfing and taking her dogs for walks on the beach. Dr Silverman also enjoys team sports like hockey, cricket, pickleball and rugby, reflecting her competitive nature from an early age.
