Our specialist bariatric surgeon, Dr Candice Silverman, is a pioneer in the use of robotic techniques in weight loss surgery, and is the first surgeon in Queensland to use robotic surgery for bariatric procedures.
Robotic surgery, using the state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic system, is particularly suited to bariatric surgery. Performing surgical procedures on obese patients can be more difficult due to thicker abdominal walls and relatively smaller internal space due to internal fatty tissue.
Robotic surgical instruments are often better suited to operating in this environment than conventional open or laparoscopic (keyhole/'minimally invasive') techniques, with robotic surgery allowing the surgeon greater visualisation, dexterity and precision during the procedure. Other advantages of robotic surgery include:
- Reduced patient trauma.
- More rapid recovery.
- Shorter hospital stays.
- Pain reduction (and so reduction in pain medication required).
- Reduction in complication risk.
