What is a gastric sleeve?
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a permanent weight loss procedure. About 85% of the stomach’s volume is removed and the remaining bit is typically shaped like a ‘tube’ or ‘sleeve’. The aim of this procedure is to reduce the volume of food that the stomach can hold.
Not everyone is eligible for gastric sleeve surgery. Typically, you need to have a BMI higher than 35 or a BMI higher of 30 with associated metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes.
Once you have had gastric sleeve surgery, you won’t be able to consume large amounts of food in one sitting. Your ‘new’ stomach only holds 200 ml of volume compared to a ‘normal’ stomach, which can typically hold about 1500ml.
Generally, it is expected that a person could lose about 70% of their excess weight within a year to 18 months after the surgery.

As you have a smaller stomach, you will feel full more quickly and therefore eat less, reducing calorie intake.
Apart from the change in the size of the stomach, all other aspects of digestion remain unchanged – with food continuing through the stomach and into the intestines as normal, and nutrients being absorbed in the normal way.
Hormonal changes contributing to weight loss
Gastric sleeve surgery also impacts the production of hunger hormones. After the procedure these hormones typically decrease. As a result, you have a reduced appetite.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy explained
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is performed under general anaesthetic. During this procedure, we make a few small incisions in the abdomen. We use one of these keyholes to insert the laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera at the end. This allows us to view the procedure on a screen.
Then we insert surgical instruments through the other incisions. They allow us to reduce the size of your stomach. The remaining part is a tubular pouch that resembles the shape of a banana.
Once the stomach is reduced in size, we close the small incisions with stitches or staples. The entire procedure takes between one to two hours.

- Both the dietitian and psychologist play a role in facilitating necessary behavioural changes, as weight loss surgery is not a ‘quick fix’. Lifestyle changes are required and this may be challenging.
