A range of different conditions may cause some form of pain in and around the anus. Some of these are straightforward and some are more serious, therefore it is important to have any anal pain checked by a medical professional.
A common cause of anal pain, particularly if it is a sharp or severe pain, is the presence of an anal fissure, although less commonly, anal pain may also be a symptom of anal/rectal cancer.
Occasionally a lump may develop on or near the anus. The lump can often be quite tender - these are generally caused by an abscess or a blood clot.
