Private health insurance weight loss surgery

Financing weight loss surgery

Many people battling severe obesity have found that weight loss surgery dramatically enhances their quality of life. They frequently note that the enduring health benefits surpass the initial costs, underlining that their newfound well-being is priceless.

Once you’re set on your weight loss journey, your options to finance the treatment will depend on your personal situation.

Private health insurance

In Australia, if you have gold cover private health insurance, it typically covers the hospital costs associated with weight loss surgery, which can be substantial. However, it’s important to note that:

  • There will be an out-of-pocket cost for the surgeon’s fee
  • There will be an out-of-pocket cost for the anaesthetist’s fee
  • You will have to pay your excess fee for your hospital admission

No private health insurance (uninsured)

Core Specialist Group welcomes uninsured patients. We will help you navigate the costs involved and provide quotes from our specialists, the hospital and the anaesthetist.

What to expect?

lf you do not have gold cover private health insurance, you are liable for the entire hospital cost.

These fees typically start at around $14,000 for theatre costs and two nights accommodation. lf you are required to stay in hospital for more than 2 nights, the hospital will charge you further accommodation fees. lf your procedure is complicated and requires further procedures this will also incur further fees.

All these fees will be payable on the day of surgery or before.

Please note there are no Medicare rebates for your hospital stay.

1. Surgeon’s fee
2. Anaesthetist’s fee
3. Hospital fees

Surgeon’s fees

Once you have seen your doctor at your initial consultation, you will have a one-on-one discussion with one of our friendly team members and all costs will be explained to you in further detail. We offer a very high standard of care to our patients and try to keep our costs at accessible prices.

Whilst trying to keep our prices accessible, there is still a gap to pay for bariatric surgery.

lf you have gold cover with your private health fund then you will receive a higher rebate

Please note these prices are approximate fees only, and are subject to change without notice. If you require an additional procedure, there will be extra fees and rebates.

Anaesthetist’s fees

Your anaesthetist will send you an estimate for your procedure. For bariatric surgery these estimates can range from $1,500 to $1,800.

lf you have gold cover with your health fund you will receive a rebate and your out-of-pocket expense will be approximately $500.

lf you are self funded then your rebate will be lower.

Other fees

You may have other fees associated with your procedure, including pharmacy, pathology or radiology fees. The hospital will send you an account after surgery if you require any of these services.

lf you are self funded then your rebate will be lower.

Hospital fees

The hospital fee will vary greatly if you are uninsured. lf you are in a health fund and have gold cover, you will be only charged your excess for your admission.

We highly recommend you call your fund to see if you are covered for bariatric surgery. You must have gold cover to be eligible for bariatric surgery.

lf you do not have private health insurance, you are liable for the entire hospital cost.
